When your A/C is not Working

Most common problems such as inadequate airflow, bad wiring, and low refrigerant can be detected with annual maintenance. However, when problems do occur, you need a qualified technician that can quickly diagnose the problem and make the repair. The expert technicians at AB May are always available to take the call and make the repair.

Common Air Conditioning Problems:

  • Frozen Coil - Frozen coils often indicate a problem with airflow.  This can be from blocked return air ductwork, or from dirty air filters.  Another reason for frozen coils could be a result of low refrigerant.
  • Faulty Wiring - Bad, uncertified air conditioning wiring is not only dangerous and a potential fire hazard, but it often prevents the system from getting power.  It can also cause the circuit breaker to trip.
  • Low Refrigerant - (also called Freon) This is the chemical that cools the air. When your refrigerant is low it may indicate a leak or a problem with the refrigeration system. All leaks need to be located and repaired by trained technician.
  • Electrical Failure - When the air conditioner turns on and off frequently, which is common in an oversized system, the compressor and fan controls can wear out. Also, corrosion of wires and the terminals can cause the unit to fail.
  • Unit Not Functioning - If the unit is not working at all it could be a lack of power, a faulty thermostat, or contactor problems.

"Excellent service.  The tech took the time to explain the components of our system, how to maintain them (changing filters ect), what we have had fixed in the past and told us about the comfort consultants who could test our system and help us find the best replacement system for our home.  Very impressive that the tech didn't  just come and check the system.  He cared enough to take the time to give us valuable information and offer other services from AB May."  Jim S  Kansas City MO
