What Temperature Should I Set My Thermostat to in the Winter?

post img

Have you ever wondered what temperature you should set your thermostat to in the winter? Most homeowners wonder how they can save energy and money during the cold months. Maintaining a consistent temperature in your home can save money and energy, but it isn’t necessarily the best for everyone. In this blog, we will discuss ideal temperatures for your home in the winter, other ways to save, and how a programmable thermostat can save you hundreds over time.

Ideal thermostat settings during the winter

For maximum financial and energy savings, set your thermostat to 68 degrees. If you or your family members are home during the day, set the temperature to 70 during the day and 68 at night.

When away from home, either for work for vacation, set your thermostat to 66 degrees. Any lower and you may risk your system using more energy on the back end to reheat your home. The goal is to keep your furnace from using unnecessary energy.

EASING INTO SAVINGS

It may seem drastic to suddenly drop the temperature several degrees, especially if the rest of your family isn’t on board. Ease into the change by lowering the temperature one degree a week. Even one degree can make a big difference. Once you have reached a lower, more efficient temperature, you may see up to 10% energy savings. According to energy.gov, you can save 5% to 15% a year on your heating bill by setting your thermostat back 10° to 15° for 8 hours at a time.

INVEST IN A smart THERMOSTAT

Smart thermostats like the Nest learn your patterns and creates a strategy to save money and energy. While more expensive than a manual or programmable thermostat, a smart thermostat will pay itself off in two years, saving you significant money for years to come. The Nest thermostat has state-of-the-art technology that will make your home safer and smarter. It also learns your patterns and adapts to them. Just use it for a week, and it will determine your rhythms and program itself. You can learn more about smart thermostats here.
