Debunking Common Plumbing Myths

Thursday, July 14, 2016

You rely on your plumbing system every day when you take a shower, clean your laundry or use for drinking, so it’s important to inform yourself about some plumbing red flags before they turn into serious problems. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering what you can and can’t put down your drain or if your leaky faucet is a sign of a bigger issue, we’re here to set the record straight!

Here are some common plumbing issues, debunked!

Myth#1: As Long As Things Are Going Down The Drain There Are No Problems

Debunked:  Many people think that as long as food waste and debris are going down the drain, there is no clog to be found. However that’s not always the case. Often times warning signs of a clogged drain are missed. If your disposal is moving more slowly than usual, or waste fragments are collecting on the discharge pipes, you could be on your way to a clog. Make sure to call a professional to avoid a bigger problem down the road.

Myth#2: A Leaky Faucet Is Nothing To Worry About

Debunked: Leaky faucets can be a serious issue if the leak is constant. Aside from increasing your water bill and being hurtful to the environment, leaky faucets can also wear out the faucet pit or stain the plumbing fixtures. Have it checked out before you have to replace your faucet.

Myth#3: You Can Put All Of Your Food Down The Garbage Disposal

Debunked: Afterall, that’s what it’s there for, isn’t it? Wrong! People break their disposals almost every day by putting in food that is too big to be down there. Anything with shells, pits or seeds should avoid your disposal, as should starchy foods like pasta and rice, which can double in size when wet and cause a serious clog.

Myth#4: A Brick in the Toilet Tank Can Save Money

Debunked: Not only does this not work, but it can actually cause serious damage to your tank. Bricks deteriorate over time and can cause other parts of your toilet to break. Keeping the brick in the tank can displace lots of water, causing you to have to flush twice anyway. That will actually defeat its intended purpose and waste more water (and money)!
