Your air conditioner has been working hard this summer and along the way has accumulated dust and debris. As the hot weather comes to an end, homeowners are starting to focus on getting their furnaces ready for winter. However, before doing so, we recommend that you take the time to winterize your A/C unit. Below are some tips on how to prepare your A/C unit for the chilly months ahead.
1) Clear the outside unit of debris and obstructions such as leaves, plants and twigs.
2) Be sure to give your air conditioner a good, gentle cleaning. However, before you do so, be sure to turn the power off to the unit and be particularly careful not to damage the fins.
3) Air conditioners are built to withstand our harsh winters, so there really isn’t a need to cover them up. Often, covers can create a cozy nesting environment for small critters that love to chew on wires.
4) You shouldn't leave your air conditioner to its own devices during the winter. Instead, periodically check on your A/C unit. Remove any snow or ice that is sitting on top of your air conditioner.
