How To Winterize Your Home

Friday, February 19, 2016

Winter is in full swing! Have you taken the steps to winterize your home? If not, don't fret. There is still time! Below are some tips to keep in mind this season.

HVAC Tips:

  • Change the air filters in your furnace on a regular basis. Doing so will improve your indoor air quality.

  • Have a programmable thermostat installed. Programming the thermostat ahead of time could save you money on your heating costs.

  • Schedule semi-annual maintenance for your heating system. After all, it could help prevent a system breakdown.

Plumbing Tips:

  • Set your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. It will keep your water supply warm while reducing water heating costs.

  • Have any exposed pipes insulated. That way, they will retain heat more efficiently. It can prevent your pipes from freezing.

Miscellaneous Tips:

  • When used correctly, your ceiling fan can actually keep you warm this winter. Have the blades of the fan rotate in a clockwise motion during the winter. In the summer you will change it to rotate in a counter clockwise motion.

  • Seal any air leaks in your home. To do this, simply caulk all windows and weatherstrip all doors.
