Space heaters can be used to assist the efforts of your HVAC system. Unfortunately, space heaters can cause house fires if they are used incorrectly or carelessly. Below are some safety tips to keep in mind when using a space heater.
Before plugging a space heater in, be sure to read the instructions and the warning labels.
If your space heater has a broken plug or loose wiring, do not use it. You will need to purchase a new space heater.
Have smoke alarms installed throughout your home. Remember to test them on a monthly basis.
Do not turn a space heater on and then leave the room.
Children and pets should not play near a space heater.
When the space heater is in use, make sure it is at least 3 feet away from papers, articles of clothing and rugs.
Never place space heaters in a high traffic area of your home.
Space heaters should be placed on a flat surface.
Once you are done with the space heater, unplug it and store it in a safe place.
