Ways to Save Water in Your Home

Wednesday, March 22, 2017

Happy World Water Day! On this day, we remember our responsibility to conserve water, a task that is becoming more and more important as time rolls on. You may not think you can make a difference just on your own, but every drop counts. By following these tips for saving water in your home, you can have a big impact on our world’s water conservation efforts.

  1. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth and washing your hands. On average, a faucet dispenses 2.5 gallons of water per minute, so don’t let all that go to waste. After wetting your brush or hands, you really only need the water running when you rinse.

  2. Cut your shower time. Old showerheads can use as much as five gallons of water per minute, so cut that shower down from 20 minutes to 10 to save some water.

  3. Only run the dishwasher when it’s full. If you’re running it when it’s only half-filled, you’re wasting gallons upon gallons of water.

  4. Choose efficient showerheads & faucets. Faucet aerators, low-flow toilets, and showerheads can equate to big water conservation. You can also look into high-efficiency washers and dishwashers for even more savings.

  5. Water outdoor plants in the early morning. You’ll need less water, since cooler morning temperatures mean losing less water to evaporation. Besides, it’s not a great idea to water in the evenings, since this can promote mold growth.

  6. Fix your leaks. It may not seem like it, but leaks can waste thousands of gallons of water a year. Not only is that bad for the environment, but it’s bad for your wallet, too.
